Mentorship Program

“surrounded, led and guided by the friends of God… I too can say that with renewed conviction: I am not alone. I do not have to carry alone what in truth I could never carry alone.”

-Benedict XVI; Homily April 24, 2005

Vocational discernment can be difficult and confusing, especially if it is done alone. As a part of the Catechetical Institute, Values Outreach has created a mentorship program which connects young adults with professed religious to help them discern God’s will. Read about the main components of the program below.

  • Discerners receive formation on discernment and religious life by watching video workshops created by Values Outreach. Each workshop is composed of 4-5 ten minute video segments.

  • Discerners will complete tasks and activities connected to those workshops which are meant to help them grow in their spiritual lives. They will also read texts related to discernment and religious life. Formation tasks will take about 30min-1hr each week.

Video workshop topics include:

Theology of Religious Life (Eschatological Nature of Religious Life, Kinds of Religious life, Poverty, Chastity, Obedience)
Monastic Practices (Liturgy of the Hours & the Horarium, Silence & the Cloister, The Habit & New Name, Marian & Eucharistic Devotion, Action & Contemplation)
Desires of Our Heart (Mary’s Heart as Model, Desire for a Spouse, Desire for Parenthood, Desire for God)
Nature of Vocation (Universal Call to Holiness, Knowing Yourself, Listening to the Holy Spirit, Detachment)

  • Discerners are connected with a professed religious who will act as a mentor as they go through the formation program.

  • Mentors will provide feedback on written tasks and will engage in long-distance, one-on-one communication throughout the program. Most correspondence will take place through the site where the videos are posted.

  • The program takes place exclusively through the Catechetical Institute’s online Learning Management System (LMS). View a sample workshop on their LMS here.

  • The program is free and will run for the course of a semester (about 4 months). Values Outreach is currently accepting applications and will launch the program in January 2020.
